I’m aware that I’ve got these, what I call “food lines.” You know, I spend a lot of my Saturday morning out on my food lines around Melbourne. I’ve got this kind of mental map of where I’ll go to buy all my organic produce… Yeah I’ve got shops everywhere. I just kind of have the maps in my head, and I’ll know what’s needed in the house. So it’s like a real lifestyle, sort of, fun thing.

Pippa’s description of her food lines highlights a particular geographic knowledge of the city related to her landscapes of food shopping. Of all my informants, George had the longest food lines, which extended beyond the city across country and regional Victoria. He said, “I love cooking at home, and therefore I visit every corner of the state to source what I consider quality produce.” George’s food lines extended from local greengrocers in his suburb to farmers’ markets across the city, to butchers in regional towns, and to rural farms. This serious shopping is, by definition, slow shopping, as it takes a lot more time and effort than visiting the supermarket. This effort is made in pursuit of “good quality” ingredients, which is central to the foodie’s morality of shopping as a practice of material consumption.
